
This activity will show you the steps on how to upgrade the SAP Kernel on JAVA system – Windows Server 2008 R2 and MaxDB database. Determine the current and desired SAP kernel. Download the necessary files (SAPEXE, SAPEXEDB & SUM) from the SAP Service Marketplace.
Extract and launch the SUM installer (You don’t need to extract the SAPEXE and SAPEXEDB files).
1. Welcome to the Software Update Manager
The initial screen of SUM will shows you the detected SAP NetWeaver system. In our case, the system is SAP NetWeaver 7.3 JAVA based. Click Next.

2. Specify User Credentials
Specify the user credentials of sidadm.

3. Select Target / 4. Confirm Target
Select Target System Version – Choose Manually Prepared Directory. Define the path of the SAPEXE and SAPEXEDB – You do not need to extract those files.

5.1 Initialization
Initialization roadmap step. No action required. Wait till the progress status is completed and click Next to start Extraction roadmap step.

5.2 Extraction
Extraction roadmap step. No action required. Wait till the progress status is completed and click Next to start Configuration roadmap step.

5.3 Configuration

• Maintain the password of Administrator user (JAVA standalone) / J2EE_ADM_SID (UME on ABAP stack).

• Verify the Target Version of SAP Kernel.

• The Configuration roadmap step completed. Click Next to move onto Checks roadmap step.

5.4 Checks
Checks roadmap step. No action required. Wait till the progress status is completed and click Next to start Preprocessing roadmap step.

5.5 Preprocessing
Preprocessing roadmap step. Some actions required here.
• Begin Downtime. Make sure that your system is ready to enter downtime.

• Preprocessing roadmap step completed. Click Next to start the Execution roadmap step.

5.6 Execution
Execution roadmap step. No action required. Wait till the progress status is completed and click Next to start Postprocessing roadmap step.

5.7 Postprocessing
Postprocessing roadmap step. Some actions required here.
• End Downtime. Make sure that your system is ready to resume production operation.

• Postprocessing roadmap step completed. Click Next to start the Finalization roadmap step.

5.8 Finalization
No action required on Finalization roadmap step. Click Next.
6. Summary
The process of SAP Kernel upgrade has finished successfully. The summary screen will shows the process runtime and system downtime. There is also a feedback form in which you can provide your feedback to SAP.
