Step 1. Check your Microsoft SQL Server 2008 build version and refer to sqlserverbuilds site for the cumulative version. You can download the cumulative update from the site as well.
Step 2. Once downloaded, unpack the file. The installer will be like SQLServer2008R2-KB2679367-x64 (depends on version and release). Double click on the file to start the installation.
Step 3. Click Next.
Step 4. Accept the license agreement.
Step 5. Select the features.
Step 6. Let the files in check completed and click on Next.
Step 7. Verify the list to update and click Update to start the update.
Step 8. The upgrade is starting now.
Step 9. The upgrade is complete and you need to restart to apply the changes.
