In this article, we will share to you on how do we perform the SAP AS JAVA patches update using the SAP Software Update Manager (SUM). For SAP AS JAVA patches, there will be no stack xml file required.
Scenario
We have SAP Netweaver 7.50 SPS17 with patch level 0 and based on SAP Note 2022434 – Patch Level 0 for Java Installation or Upgrade,
Web AS Java patch level 0 is not recommended because it does not always include all the subsequent corrections delivered in patches for lower SPS levels. It occurs due to the different time frames for production of patches and of a whole SPS.

Preparation
Open the SAP Maintenance Planner. Ensure both Sync and Verify is in green state. Click on Plan.

At define change stage, select Plan a Minimum Software Change.

Click on Continue.

Next, select Update SAP NetWeaver and choose the current SPS version of your system. In our case, the current SPS version is 17. Click Confirm Selection.

Click on Next.
The OS/DB dependent files selection is optional. But, it is always recommended to update the kernels, JVM, host agent and use the latest SUM. Click on Confirm Selection.

Click on Add Java Patches.

Go to For Unchanged Components tab, click on File check box. Now, click on Validate Dependencies. Finally, click on OK.

Click on Next.
Click on Push to Download Basket.

Open the SAP Download Manager and you will see all the files are now visible from the download queue. Download them all!

Now, come to the upgrade part. Basically, we will NOT be explaining the upgrade in details as the upgrade process will be the same as when you do for any other upgrade.
Once all the media files are fully downloaded, launch the SAP Software Update Manager.
So, when you reached the Select Target phase in the SAP Software Update Manager, select Manually prepared directory and locate the location of media files which you downloaded as per above step.

Click Next and the rest of upgrade process will be much similar to any other SAP upgrade.
